Ceramics Bentonite

Our Bentonite is commonly used in the ceramics industry as a plasticizer and binder for ceramic bodies, glazes, and engobes. Its ability to absorb water and create a gel-like substance makes it an effective plasticizer that can improve the workability and plasticity of ceramic clays

In pottery and porcelain clay bodies additions of only 2% can produce marked improvements in workability and dry strength without much effect on fired color. The use of up to 5% is common, especially where high plasticity is needed it a white burning body.

Bentonites have incredibly small particle sizes (bigger surface areas). Combine this with the active particle surface chemistry (which makes them hold onto water) and it the most plastic and impermeable common clay material used in ceramics. Its contribution to working properties in glazes and clay bodies is balanced by the undesirable properties. In addition, bentonite is valued for its ability to improve the firing characteristics of ceramic formulations. It can help to reduce cracking and warping during the firing process, resulting in a higher quality finished product.

Benefits

  • Gives high bonding properties & Low shrinkage.
  • Good Plasticity with large surface area, less consumption & smooth finish.
  • Fine material helpful for filling cavities.
